How much can I earn in the oil and gas industry by Michael Cheary It’s no secret that jobs in the oil and gas industry can be incredibly lucrative.In fact, not only are the average salaries amongst the most lucrative in any industry, but many roles also include a number of bonuses and overtime payments which put the pay packets up even further. And that’s without even considering contract work.Not sure how much money is out there? Here are some of the top jobs in the oil and gas industry, and how much they pay:Gas EngineerSpecialising in either service or installation, Gas Engineers install, repair and monitor gas systems and appliances. They work in a range of different settings, from large office buildings and structures on an industrial scale, or concentrate on working in private homes or other residential settings.Salary: Starting salary would be around £14,000, rising to £30,000 once fully qualified.Offshore DrillerWorking on oil rigs or drilling platforms, Offshore Drillers supervise all drilling operations, pr imarily controlling the speed and rate of drilling.  Working in teams with Derrickmen and Assistant Drillers, they also need to select the right type of drill bit to suit the terrain, as well as employing techniques which will prolong the life of the bit.Salary: Between £30,000 and £50,000, depending on experience.Petroleum GeologistA Petroleum Geologist is a scientist who specialises in the discovery, estimation and extraction of oil and gas deposits underneath the surface of the Earth. It’s their job to inform an oil company of where they should be drilling, using techniques such as geochemical analysis, sonar and satellite mapping to determine where the most profitable (and safest) deposits can be found.Salary: Petroleum Geologists earn an average salary of around £50,000.Pipeline EngineerPipeline Engineers design and install the vast network of pipes that are used to transport gas deposits. They can work offshore or onshore, and in any part of the oil and gas process. Howe ver, with hundreds of thousands of miles worth of pipelines needed worldwide, the job is an absolutely essential part of the industry.Salary: Around £50,000, on average, although Senior Pipeline Engineer salaries can easily reach closer to the £70,000 mark.Oil TraderTo put it simply, Oil Traders are commodities traders who buy and sell crude oil on behalf of a third party. They may also sell ‘futures contracts’, for those who wish to buy a certain amount at a pre-determined date in the future. Potential clients for Oil Traders include energy companies, investment firms, private businesses, or any other organisation with in an interest in acquiring large quantities of oil.Salary: Somewhere between £50,000 and £70,000, not taking into account the lucrative bonuses available.Risk ManagerThe oil and gas industry is a volatile and ever-changing one, and one which is affected by a range of economic, geographic and geological factors. It’s a Risk Manager’s job to advise busines ses on any potential threats which may come their way, and put contingency plans in place for every possible scenario, in order to minimise loss to profitability or reputation.Salary: Between £50,000 and £70,000, as a rough estimate.Refining EngineerWorking exclusively in the downstream process of the oil and gas industry, Refining Engineers design, install and oversee oil refineries, ensuring that they continue to run smoothly, safely, and consistently maintain their quality output. They are experts in computer-aided design (CAD), and need to keep their expertise up-to-date in order to stay at the top of their game.Salary: Somewhere in the region of £60,000.Subsea EngineerSubsea Engineers exclusively deal with the installation and maintenance of mechanical systems under the sea. This could include building oil well rigging, wellheads and pipelines, or even underwater vehicles/other equipment. The job also covers technical analysis and research, such as studying the seabed to see if it can support any new structures added.Salary: £70,000, as a rough estimate.Completion EngineerCompletion Engineers design and monitor the installation of well completions, to help maximise oil and gas production. This could involve measuring production rates or pressure, as well as using CAD to design the well, and overseeing all work in the field to ensure the plans are carried out effectively. This job may also come under the banner of Petroleum Engineer.Salary: Average salary for a Completion Engineer is around £100,000.Drilling ConsultantA Drilling Consultant takes responsibility for all day-to-day rig operations, be it relaying orders from on-shore supervisors and relaying them on-site, or dealing with vendors and contractors. London Diaries Top Five Thoughts on Getting Around In a few days I will have been staying in London for a month now. Like many tourists, one of the bigger challenges that I had to face was how to get around in this amazing city. With the number of things to do and sights to see, hopping from one place to another is inevitable.  To help out other travel bugs or business travelers who will be setting out for the UK sooner or later,  heres a quick post to share my top 5 thoughts/tips on getting around in London. “Why is everyone in a rush!” I think it is the same as any other big city out there, but it is worth mentioning that people’s speed of walking here is more a purposeful trot than a leisurely stroll. Sometimes, particularly in rush hour, people will tend to go into a half-run kind of walk, with long strides and determined faces. This is important to know because Londoners can be  unforgiving of tourists who are trying to take in the sights while walking. While taking out that camera to capture a travel moment is understandable, also understand that it can be inconsiderate. If you want to take your time or take a photo, find a spot that will not block pedestrians. Also, stand to the right side of escalators to give way to people who are rushing to get to the top. “I love the tube!” The London Underground, more known as the Tube, is a very efficient way to get around the city. It can take you from one side of the city to another within minutes, and without having to walk too far to switch routes. They are conveniently situated near landmarks and attractions. It is worth keeping an app on your phone to check the tube schedule, in case it is not available for your stop, since there are several rerouting and station repair advisories that happen from time to time. As it is underground, there is no reception. So make sure you know where you are going and which transfers you need to make before you go underground. From what Ive learned the tubes last trips are around midnight, so if you are on a night out, be aware of your other transport options in case you miss it. “I hope there are still top seats left!” Riding the iconic double decker bus of London is one of the best ways to see the inner streets of London. As a tourist, I really enjoy sitting at the front seats of the top floor of London buses because it showcases not just its must-see establishments but the city’s quaint lines of houses, bustling high streets, and many more. Its arrival and departure times are conveniently displayed in most bus stops. Be reminded that you can’t stand on the stairs and on the top deck. These buses are also wheelchair and baby stroller friendly, which makes them one of the most accessible ways of getting around the city. One thing to be wary about it that since it has many stops and can go through busy streets, it can take you a while to get to your destination. “These cabs are expensive!” Black cabs are the second most expensive cabs in the world (next to Tokyo!). If you are taking one, take one for the experience. Some of them offer guided tours of the city. I think that it is the driver’s knowledge of the city that you are paying for and not the transport. You can find these guided tours in sites like TripAdvisor. If you need a cab after a drunken night, go for Uber cars instead, which is far more affordable and convenient for worry free cab transport. “A car would be awesome right now If you miss driving or taking cabs, or if you need to get around the city/countryside more often, it is worth looking into the option of renting a car. This is especially useful if you want to drive to other parts of the UK or if you are on a business trip and will be staying in the UK for longer.   You can hire a car in London which can guarantee you the convenience of driving your own car around town. According to the UK Department of Transport, if you are a visitor to London with a drivers license that was issued outside of the UK, you can drive any small vehicle listed on your license for 12 months from when you enter the country. Heres a caveat though: gas and parking is expensive, so make sure you consider these costs if you intend to use a car regularly. Whatever you choose, figuring out how to get from one place to another in a foreign country is a fun way of getting to know it, so take your time and don’t be afraid to make some odd turns once in a while. And respect is hard to buy.If you work for a reasonable employer â€" you will get a raise.Sometimes, you may not get a raise because of conditions (company is not doing good, recession,etc.). I asked for a raise, the company was going through scrutiny and changes because of the recession. However, few months later when things bounced back â€" guess who was the first person to get a raise in the company… Yes it was me.Sometimes, you will not get a raise â€" maybe your employer is unreasonable OR they cannot afford you. Unplug and embrace rest - In an effort to convince you to ramp up your job search efforts during the holidays (look below for links to part 1,   2 and 3),   Im sharing ideas and insights from some of my colleagues and friends during this holiday week and next. Since it is Thanksgiving, I wanted to share some words of wisdom from my friend and co-leader of the Career Collective Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter. Jacqui is a well-respected resume writer; her business is Career Trend. Jacqui has become a good friend and trusted colleague after we originally met via Twitter. I always look forward to our conversations and am so happy to have opportunities to collaborate with her. So, when I saw Jacqui tweet this the day before Thanksgiving, I thought it would make a perfect Thanksgiving post in the midst of my series encouraging you NOT to slow down your job hunt during the holidays: I agree! While it is important to keep at the job hunt during this time of the year, taking some time off to recharge (by UNplugging!) and rejuvanate is important.
